A home invasion is a specific type of crime. It happens when someone enters a building while people are already living there.

This is different from a normal burglary. In a regular burglary, a person might only want to steal things. In a home invasion, the person often intends to use force against the people inside. They might want to rob, kidnap, or hurt others. Because people are present, law enforcement considers these events very dangerous. A violent fight can happen between the residents and the intruder.

People have used many names for this over time. Before the modern term was common, people called it a "hot burglary." Other old terms included "burglary of occupied homes." The phrase "home invasion" first appeared in a 1912 Washington Post article. Later, a 1925 Los Angeles Times article used the term in its modern way. In June 1995, Police Chief James T. Hurley wrote about these crimes in a law enforcement bulletin. He suggested that as bank security improved, some criminals chose homes instead. He urged the public to learn more about home security.

Laws about these crimes vary depending on where you live. In the United States, some states have specific laws just for home invasions. These include Georgia, Michigan, Connecticut, Illinois, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Nevada. Other states, like South Carolina and Maryland, have introduced similar laws. In 2008, Congressman Chris Murphy proposed making it a federal crime. In some places, like New Hampshire, a 2011 bill made home invasion deaths a capital crime. Many areas also follow the "castle doctrine." This allows people to defend their homes without having to run away first.

History shows many famous and sad examples of these events. In 1932, a baby named Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr. was taken from his home in New Jersey. A gang in France called the Chauffeurs de la Drôme attacked homes between 1905 and 1908. In 1959, the Clutter family was killed in Kansas during a robbery. A football player named Sean Taylor was also killed during an invasion in 2007.

In 2007, the Petit family in Connecticut suffered a terrible attack. Two men were eventually sentenced to life in prison for their crimes.

In many other countries, there is no single law called home invasion. Instead, officials charge the person for the specific crimes they commit. They might be charged with armed robbery or other serious offenses. In Canada, the law treats these entries as a way to make other crimes more serious. In English law, carrying a weapon during a burglary can lead to a charge of aggravated burglary. This stays true even if the person does not use the weapon. These laws help ensure that the specific actions taken inside a home are addressed by the courts.
