The word solicitation has a few different meanings. It can mean offering to buy goods or services. It can also mean asking someone to do something.

In the United States, solicitation can be a crime. This happens when a person asks or pays another to commit a crime. The person must intend for the crime to happen. It is still a crime even if the bad act never occurs. For example, a person might ask someone to hurt another person. Even if the second person says no, the first person is still in trouble.

Sometimes, the word is used for door-to-door sellers. Many people put up "no soliciting" signs on their homes.

These signs tell sellers they cannot come to the door. In some cities, sellers must wear a badge to show who they are. They must also follow local rules about these signs.

In England and Wales, the term is used for different laws. It can involve people asking for work in public places. It is not the same as a solicitor. In those countries, a solicitor is a type of lawyer.
