Law society

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A law society is a group for lawyers. These groups have a big job. They watch how lawyers train. They check if lawyers are ready to work. They also make sure lawyers follow the rules. This helps the law work well for everyone.

In Canada, each province has its own law society. These groups work for the public. In Quebec, there are two groups. One is for legal advocates. The other is for notaries. Notaries are people who handle legal papers.

In the United Kingdom, there are many groups. The Law Society of England and Wales was founded in 1825. In Australia, law societies help solicitors. Solicitors are one kind of lawyer. In Australia, a separate group helps barristers. Barristers are another kind of lawyer.

Some places are changing how they work. In England and Wales, governments now help run the rules. This lets law societies focus on helping their members. Law societies also help people get legal aid. This means they help people get legal help for free or for a small cost.
