It can be a railing or a wall. The bar separates the people in the trial. Lawyers and judges sit on one side. The public sits on the other side.

This idea started in medieval Europe. It kept the public away from the court staff.

The word bar also means the legal profession. In the United States, you must pass a test to join. This is called the bar exam. Most people must also finish law school first. Some states use a big test called the MBE. If a lawyer breaks the rules, they are disbarred. This means they lose their license to practice law.

In the United Kingdom, the word is used differently. It refers to a group of lawyers called barristers. In Scotland, these people are called advocates. There are also other lawyers called solicitors. There is even a special patent bar. This is a test for people who work with science or engineering. They help protect new inventions.
