Long ago, judges sat on long seats. These seats were called benches. Because of this, the word bench has new meanings today.

One meaning refers to the judges themselves. People use the word bench to talk about all judges. They might say "the federal bench" for judges in the United States. You might also hear about the "King's Bench" in England. Sometimes, all the judges in a court sit together. This is called a full bench.

In court, we use different words for different people. Judges are called "the bench." Lawyers are called "the bar." When we talk about both together, we say "the bench and the bar." This helps us know who is who in the courtroom. The bench and the bar work together in the legal system.
