Authority is a special kind of power. It is the right to lead. People follow a leader because they think it is fair. This is called legitimacy.

Long ago in Europe, people had three main roles. Some were clerics who prayed. Some were knights who fought. Others were workers in the fields.

In the United States, leaders get power from the people. This is called consent. The Founding Fathers helped set these rules. They wanted people to stay free. Even President Abraham Lincoln spoke about this. He said no person is good enough to rule another without permission.

Children also see authority every day. They look to parents and teachers. They check if a leader is fair. They look at a person's skills or their job. They also look at how a person acts. If a teacher is kind but firm, children may follow them more easily. This helps children learn and grow in a safe way.
