In the United States, most counties have their own courthouse. There are about 17,000 of them. Early American courthouses were very simple. They had plain furniture. By the middle of the 1800s, they changed. They became big and grand. They often had tall domes and clock towers. Many have many steps at the front. This makes the building look strong.

Safety is very important in these buildings. Modern courthouses use special tools to keep people safe. They use secure entrances to check for weapons. Some large buildings have different doors. One door is for the public. Another door is for judges. A third door is for prisoners. This helps keep everyone separate and safe while they move through the building.
