A prison is a place where people stay under state rule.

Most people go there as punishment for crimes. Some stay while they wait for a trial. Others stay after they are found guilty.

In ancient times, prisons were very different. In Athens, the prison was called the desmoterion. This name means "the place of chains." The Romans used prisons too. They used metal cages and basements. Some prisoners lived in a place called the Mamertine Prison. It was built around 640 B.C. in Rome. It was located under a sewer system.

In the Middle Ages, people used castles for prisons. Some people were sent to work on ships. They were chained to the bottom of boats.

Later, new ideas changed how prisons worked. Some thought prisons should be scary to stop crime. Others thought prisons could help people change. They wanted to teach people to be good.

In England, some people were sent far away to colonies. This was called transportation. They had to work for a set time. Over time, prisons became the main way to punish people.
