This usually happens if someone is suspected of a crime. Police officers have the power to make an arrest. In some places, a regular person can also do this. This is called a citizen's arrest.

Laws help make sure arrests are fair. In the United States, police must have a good reason. This is called probable cause. In the United Kingdom, officers must tell the person why they are being arrested. They must also use simple words.

After an arrest, the person might stay in a room for a short time. In the United States, they must be charged or let go soon. This is often within 24 or 48 hours. In India, a police officer must tell the person about their crime. They must also say if the person can use bail. Bail is a way to be released before a trial. An arrest can have a big effect on a person's life. It can change their work or how others see them.
