Most people go there as punishment for different crimes. Some people stay in these facilities while they wait for their trial. These people are in what is called pre-trial detention. Other people stay because they have been found guilty of a crime. They must serve a sentence for what they did. Prisons can also be used during wars to hold prisoners of war.

Different places use different names for these buildings. In Australia, people use the words jail, prison, or gaol. Many old gaols are now popular places for tourists to visit. In Canada, officials might use the word institution or penitentiary. The United States uses two different words for local and state levels. A jail is usually run by a local county sheriff. It holds people for shorter times, often less than one year. A prison or penitentiary is run by state or federal governments. It is for people who must stay for many years.

People have used many kinds of places for prisoners throughout history. In ancient Athens, the prison was called the desmoterion. This name means "the place of chains." The Romans were among the first to use prisons as a punishment. They used metal cages or even basements for this. One famous place was the Mamertine Prison in Rome. Ancus Marcius established it around 640 B.C. It was located in a sewer system under the city.

During the Middle Ages, people used castles or fortresses as prisons. Some people were sentenced to galley slavery. This meant they were chained to the bottom of ships. They had to row the vessels for work. In England, the government used a system called transportation. This sent people to live and work in the Americas. This started in the 1610s and lasted until 1776. Later, Britain sent people to colonies in Australia. This happened between the years 1788 and 1868.

New ideas changed how prisons worked in the modern era. Some people believed in deterrence theory. This idea says prisons should be harsh to stop crime. Other people believed in rehabilitation. They thought prisons should help people change their behavior. They wanted to teach prisoners to be good members of society. Some old buildings, like abbeys, were even turned into prisons.
