This system uses many different groups to keep order. One main goal is to give justice when a crime happens. It also tries to help victims of crimes. Other goals include stopping more crimes from happening. Some parts of the system try to reform or rehabilitate people. This means helping them change for the better. The system works to maintain the rule of law in a society.

Law enforcement is often the first part of the system.

Police officers investigate suspected wrongdoings and make arrests. If a person is a danger to a whole nation, a national agency might help. Police work to keep the peace and follow the law. They can use force to maintain social order when needed. Most police work in a specific area or state. In the United States, the FBI was formed in 1908. It investigates specific federal laws for the whole country.

Courts are the places where disputes are settled.

Many people work together in a courtroom. A judge or magistrate listens to the case. They must be objective and know the law well. A prosecutor is a lawyer who represents the state. They explain what crime happened and show the evidence. A defense attorney helps the person accused of the crime. They suggest strategies and protect the interests of their client. In the U.S., the state may pay for a lawyer if a person cannot afford one.

Deciding if someone is guilty is a very important job.

In some places, a jury of citizens makes this choice. A jury is a group of unbiased people. In the U.S., a jury can find someone "not guilty." They do not use the word "innocent." Some nations use judges instead of juries for this. Some cases even end with a plea bargain. This is when an accused person pleads guilty to get a different punishment. This can save the state the cost of a full trial.

If a person is found guilty, they go to corrections.

Long ago, people used exile or execution as punishment. In America, the Quaker movement helped change how prisons work. They believed prisons should help reform criminals. Many modern prisons offer schooling or job training. This helps people learn a trade for the future. Other punishments include paying fines or doing community service. Some places still use capital punishment, which is a big debate worldwide.
