Revenge is an action meant to cause harm to a person or a group. This happens because of a grievance, which is a feeling that something wrong was done.

It can happen because of a real injury or just a perceived one. Some people believe revenge is different from formal justice. For example, restorative justice focuses on fixing things, while revenge focuses on the harm itself. Social psychologist Ian McKee says people might use revenge to feel powerful. They may want to protect their status or their reputation.

In some societies, revenge can turn into a long cycle called a feud. A feud is a series of fights between families or tribes. These cycles often happen because people want to protect their honor. When a group feels insulted, they might retaliate to restore their dignity. This can create an endless loop that lasts for many generations. In Albania, this tradition is known as gjakmarrja, or blood feuds. These feuds can involve extended relatives rather than just one person. Similar traditions have been found in parts of Turkey and Papua New Guinea.

History shows us many different ways people have viewed these actions. In Japan, the practice of revenge killings was called katakiuchi. This often involved a person's relatives as well.

Philosophers often make a distinction between punishment and revenge. They say punishment is a rational way to stop future wrongs from happening. In contrast, revenge is driven by anger and a desire to see someone suffer. Because of this, people often disagree on whether an act is actually revenge. It is often just a label that others use to describe what they see.

Revenge is also a very common theme in art and stories. You can find it in famous paintings and many different operas. In literature, authors like William Shakespeare used it in plays like Hamlet.

Some stories use a device called dramatic irony to build tension. This is when the reader knows something that the characters do not. There are even famous sayings about revenge. One popular English phrase is that revenge is a dish best served cold. This suggests that revenge feels more satisfying if it is unexpected.

Interestingly, humans are not the only ones who act this way. Many animals have been seen seeking revenge in the wild. Primatologists have studied chimpanzees and seen them use revenge to gain dominance. Even birds like crows can carry feuds similar to human ones. Professor John Marzluff has studied how crows behave in these ways. Some studies even show that fish can display vengeful behavior. It seems that the desire to react to a wrong is found in many living things.
