Hubris is a word used to describe extreme or excessive pride. It often involves dangerous overconfidence or arrogance. People with hubris might lose contact with reality. They may overestimate their own skills or accomplishments. This mindset focuses on needing a victory instead of making peace. This can cause problems for the person and their group.

In Ancient Greece, the word had several different meanings. In religious stories, it meant acting against a god. Some people believed mortals should not claim to be better than gods. For example, a weaver named Arachne said she was better than Athena. Because of this, she was turned into a spider. Other names from these stories include Icarus and Phaethon.

Ancient laws also used the word hubris in specific ways. In Athens, it meant using violence to shame a victim. It could also involve stealing public or sacred property. The philosopher Aristotle said hubris was done for personal pleasure. He said it was not the same as seeking revenge. Instead, it was about trying to feel superior to others.

History and religion offer more examples of these ideas. In the play The Persians, King Xerxes I was seen as arrogant. He allegedly tried to bind the Hellespont sea with chains. In early Christian writings, hubris is seen as pride that defies God. It is described as trying to be equal to a divine being. This kind of pride is often linked to a loss of humility.

Today, we still use the word to describe certain behaviors. We call it "pride that blinds" because it can lead to foolish choices. It is similar to the idea of arrogance. Arrogance is having an inflated opinion of one's own importance. Some thinkers believe hubris is more severe than simple arrogance. Both ideas help us understand how overconfidence affects people.
