Hubris is a word for extreme pride. It means having too much confidence in yourself. This can lead to being very arrogant. People with hubris may lose touch with what is real. They might think they are better than they truly are.

In Ancient Greece, the word had many meanings. In stories, hubris meant breaking the natural order. For example, a weaver named Arachne said she was better than a goddess. Because of this, she was turned into a spider.

In old laws, hubris meant using violence to shame others. It also meant stealing public property. Some thinkers say hubris is about seeking pleasure by hurting people. This is not the same as revenge. It is about feeling superior to others.

In early Christian ideas, hubris is a pride that defies God. It is seen as a way to act like a god. Today, people use the word to describe pride that blinds a person. It can cause them to act in foolish ways.
