The English poet John Milton wrote it. He wrote the poem in blank verse. This means the lines have a steady beat. But the lines do not rhyme. Milton was blind when he wrote it. He spoke the words to his friends. They wrote them down for him.

The poem tells a big story. It is about the fall of man. It starts in the middle of the action. Satan and his angels have lost a war. They are cast into Hell. Satan wants to trick Adam and Eve. He enters the Garden of Eden in a snake's skin.

He tricks Eve into eating fruit from a special tree. Adam eats the fruit too. This act changes everything. They feel guilt and shame for the first time. They must leave the garden. Even so, the poem ends with hope. It speaks of a way to be saved. Many artists have made paintings of this story. It remains a very important work of art.
