It can be a want for money, food, or land. It can also be a want for power or status. Some people think greed is a personality trait. It can make a person feel unhappy. They may always want more even after they get what they need.

Many cultures have stories about greed. In Greek myths, a man named Tantalus is punished. He sees food and water but can never eat or drink them.

In China, old texts speak of a greedy creature called Taotie. Many North American Indian tales use bears to show greed.

Religions also have views on this idea. The Ten Commandments in the Bible tell people not to be greedy. In the Quran, people are told not to waste things. Many thinkers believe greed can hurt a community. They say it can stop people from helping each other.
