Hedonism is a group of ideas about pleasure.

Some thinkers focus on why we act. Psychological hedonism says we always seek pleasure. It also says we try to avoid pain. This view says people only help others to get a benefit for themselves.

Other ideas look at what is truly valuable. Axiological hedonism says pleasure is the only thing with value on its own. Other things, like money, are only useful if they bring pleasure. Some say the value of pleasure depends on how strong it is. Others say the quality of pleasure matters more. For example, art might be a better joy than food.

Ethical hedonism is about how we should live. It says we should seek pleasure and avoid pain. One version says we should try to make everyone happy. This is called utilitarianism.

Another version says we should only care about our own joy. This is called egoistic hedonism. People have talked about these ideas for a long time. Ancient thinkers in Greece, India, and China all studied them.
