Egoism

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

What drives our actions? This is a big question in philosophy. One idea is called egoism. It focuses on the role of the self. It looks at how the self is a goal for our actions.

There are two main ways to look at this. Some thinkers use descriptive egoism. They use this to describe how people act. They say people often act in their own interest. Others use normative egoism. This says people ought to act for themselves.

Some ideas focus on biology. Biological egoism says we act to help our genes. This helps us pass on life to the next group. Other thinkers, like Friedrich Nietzsche, had many ideas. He thought some moral rules were just ways to control people. He looked at how different groups view power.

Some people disagree with egoism. They believe in altruism. Altruism is the idea of caring for others more than yourself. Other thinkers ask if the "self" is even real. They wonder if the self is just an illusion. This shows how many ways there are to think about who we are.
