It started in Europe a long time ago. Many people think it began with German idealism. This way of thinking grew from the work of Immanuel Kant. He focused on the self and how we see the world.

Continental philosophers look at how people and society work. They often think that science is not the only way to know things. They believe our history and culture shape what we know.

Some thinkers say we can change our world through our own actions. This is a big part of ideas like existentialism.

There is no single rule for what this means. Some people use the name to group many different ideas. These ideas include things like phenomenology and structuralism. Other thinkers use a different style called analytic philosophy. For a long time, people saw these as two separate schools. Today, many thinkers study both ways of thinking.
