Selfishness

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Selfishness is when a person thinks only of themselves. They may care only about their own joy or gain. This is the opposite of being selfless. Many thinkers have different views on this idea.

In the past, some people thought selfishness was a bad thing. In Western Christian history, it was seen as a major sin. This sin was linked to pride. However, some thinkers had different views. Adam Smith spoke of an "invisible hand." He thought selfish interests could help the whole economy. John Locke believed people should make their own choices. He thought selfishness was part of human nature.

Other people, like Ayn Rand, thought selfishness was a good thing. They saw it as a way to make progress. But Jacques Maritain disagreed. He said people are social animals. He believed we find good things by helping our community.

Nature shows us selfishness too. In biology, species must compete for food and space. Charles Darwin noted that this helps animals survive. Sometimes, animals work together to help themselves. Wild dogs hunt in groups. This helps each dog get food more easily.
