Yang Zhu

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Yang Zhu was a thinker in old China. He lived during the Warring States period. He started a school of thought called Yangism.

Yang Zhu had many ideas about how to live. He believed in self-preservation. This means looking after your own body and life. He taught that people should mind their own business. He said we should not take from others. We should also not give too much away. If everyone does this, the world will be well. He said we should not harm others for gain. This helps keep both people and society safe.

Some people did not like his ideas. A thinker named Mencius was very critical. Mencius said Yang Zhu would not pluck a hair to help the world. But Yang Zhu felt that hurting yourself does not help others.

Yang Zhu also thought about how we spend our time. He said life can be very short. Much of it is spent sleeping or being sick. He thought we should find joy in things like music. We should try to be happy in the present. He said death is natural. We should not fear it. Instead, we should live life to the fullest.
