Yang Zhu

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Yang Zhu was a famous thinker in ancient China. He lived during a time called the Warring States period. This was a time of much change and struggle. He started a school of thought known as Yangism.

Many people in his time found his ideas very important. Some thinkers even called his ideas floods or wild animals. They felt his ideas could change the whole land. Today, we find his words in several old Chinese texts. These include the Huainanzi and the Liezi.

Yang Zhu had a very special way of looking at life. He focused on something called self-preservation. This means looking after your own body and your own life.

He believed that everyone has a survival instinct. He taught that people should mind their own business. This means we should not take things from others. We should also not give too much of ourselves away. Yang Zhu said if everyone did this, the world would be well. He thought that if no one harmed a single hair, the world would be good.

Some other thinkers did not agree with him at all. A famous man named Mencius was very critical of Yang Zhu. Mencius said Yang Zhu would not even pluck a hair to help the world.

He thought these ideas were bad for society and kings. But Yang Zhu had a different reason for his view. He believed that hurting yourself does not actually help other people. He also said we should not harm others to get what we want. To him, being kind to others means not hurting them for gain.

Yang Zhu also thought a lot about how much time we have. He said that a long life might only last one hundred years.

Much of that time is spent sleeping or being sick. He believed we should find joy in the present moment. This might include things like music or seeing beautiful things. He felt that chasing fame is a waste of time. We should not let laws or rewards push us too hard. He thought life could feel like a prison if we worry too much.

Finally, Yang Zhu had calm thoughts about the end of life. He believed that death is a natural part of being alive.

We should not feel fear or awe when death comes. He said that funeral ceremonies do not matter to the dead. A person does not care if they are buried in a coffin. They do not care about fine clothes or being in a ditch. What matters most is how we live our lives. He believed we should live life to the very fullest.
