Lu Jiuyuan was a famous Chinese philosopher and writer. He lived during the Song dynasty from 1139 to 1192. He is also known by his honorific name, Lu Xiangshan. Lu founded the school of the universal mind. This was the second most influential school in Neo-Confucianism. He was a major rival to another thinker named Zhu Xi.

Lu had a very special way of looking at the world. He believed that the mind and the universe were one. He once said that the universe is his mind. He also said his mind is the universe. This was different from the ideas of Zhu Xi. Zhu Xi believed the mind of humanity and the Way were separate. Lu believed everything was connected through the heart and mind.

Lu built his ideas on the work of a man named Mencius. He taught about the concept of the original mind. This means all people are born with goodness inside them. Lu said we have four roots in our heart. These roots are compassion, shame, respect, and knowing right from wrong. We must nurture these roots like plants so they can bloom. These roots help our true moral nature grow strong.

Other ideas also shaped how Lu thought about life. He was influenced by Daoism, which values simplicity. He believed people should live without many human desires. This helps people stay true to their simple nature. He also liked the idea of spontaneity. This means acting in a natural and harmonious way. Lu wanted people to find stillness to help them act well.

After Lu died in 1192, his ideas were almost forgotten in China. A thinker named Wang Yangming brought them back later. They are often called the Lu-Wang school because of these two men. This school had a very large influence in Japan. In the twentieth century, many people in China studied Lu again. A man named Liang Shuming wrote about his ideas in 1921. Even a warlord named Yan Xishan tried to use his model.
