He lived during the Warring States period. This was a time of many wars and many different ideas. He was a follower of Confucianism. This is a way of thinking that started with Confucius. Xunzi helped make these ideas much stronger. His work helped Confucianism grow for a long time. His writings are still in excellent condition today. These books help us understand his life and his thoughts.

To learn, Xunzi went to a famous place. He studied at the Jixia Academy in the state of Qi. This was a major center for many different thinkers. At the academy, he learned about many different schools of thought. He also learned how to use persuasion to advise rulers. Later, he traveled to the state of Chu. In Chu, he became very skilled at writing poetry. He eventually returned to Qi as a highly respected teacher.

As a teacher, Xunzi was very famous. People called him one of the most respected teachers of his time. He had many students who became important in politics. Two of his students were named Han Fei and Li Si. Some of his other students wrote important books about old classics. Xunzi even served in the court of a leader named Lord Chunshen. He lived a long life of traveling and teaching.

One of Xunzi's most famous ideas is about human nature. He believed that human nature is evil. This means he thought people are not born good. This idea was different from another thinker named Mencius. Mencius believed that people are naturally good. Xunzi thought that people must change themselves to be good. He believed people could use education and special rituals to improve. He called these learned good habits "artifice."

Because of his ideas, Xunzi's reputation changed over time. For a long time, many people did not favor his views. By the 10th century, the ideas of Mencius became more popular. However, people in the 20th century began to look at his work again. They realized how much he influenced the history of East Asia. His work shows us how people can use learning to grow. It reminds us that we can always work to become better.
