Han Fei was a famous thinker from ancient China. He lived during the Warring States period. He was a prince from the state of Han. Many people call him the greatest representative of Legalism. This is a way of thinking about how to rule a country. His ideas are collected in a book called the Han Feizi. This book is an anthology of his many writings.

His ideas focused on how a leader can keep firm control. He believed a ruler should use three main tools. These tools are power, technique, and law. He also used a system called the "two handles." These handles are rewards and punishments. He believed leaders should use these to guide people. He also talked about a concept called wu wei, or "non-exertion."

Han Fei learned from many different teachers. He studied with a philosopher named Xun Kuang. He also learned from the ideas of Shang Yang and Shen Buhai. Shang Yang focused on laws. Shen Buhai focused on administrative techniques. Han Fei combined these different ideas into one big system. He wanted to show how a ruler could manage a state.

History tells us many things about his life. Han Fei had a stutter, which made speaking difficult. Because of this, he became a brilliant writer. He studied alongside a man named Li Si. Li Si later became a chancellor in the Qin state. The story says the King of Qin wanted to meet Han Fei. However, Li Si caused Han Fei to be imprisoned. Han Fei died by drinking poison in 233 B.C.E.

Even though his ideas were sometimes disliked, they were very important. The Han dynasty later called Legalism an outcast idea. Still, Han Fei's theories helped many dynasties that came after. His work on laws and power is still studied today. Some people even compare his ideas to a writer named Machiavelli. His thoughts helped shape how many leaders ruled China for a long time.
