This was a time when many different lands fought for power. Su Qin was a strategist. A strategist is someone who makes clever plans to help leaders. He was born in Chengxuan Village in Luoyang. This place is in the Henan Province today. He studied very hard to learn how to guide kings. He was a student of a teacher named Guiguzi.

Su Qin had a big plan called the Vertical Alliance. He wanted six states to join together as one team. These states were Qi, Chu, Yan, Han, Zhao, and Wei. He wanted them to stop the strong Qin state. To show his success, he wore robes with symbols from all six states. He used very strong words to persuade the leaders. He traveled to many different places to talk to kings. His job was to make sure these states stayed united. This was a very hard job because the states often fought each other.

Before he was famous, Su Qin had a very difficult life. Legend says he traveled for many years after his studies. When he returned home, his own family did not recognize him. His parents and wife did not treat him with respect. He felt very sad about this. He went into his room to study even harder. Many years later, he became a great leader. When he returned home with honors, his family welcomed him with great respect. This story created a Chinese saying about how people's attitudes can change quickly.

Su Qin met many different rulers to share his ideas. He spoke to the ruler of Yan and the ruler of Zhao. He told the King of Wei to focus on the alliance. He also spoke to the King of Chu. However, not every meeting went well. The state of Qi did not join the alliance. Instead, they stayed friendly with the Qin state. This was a big problem for Su Qin's plan. Later, some old silk papers were found in Changsha. These papers help historians understand his real life better. They show he may have lived a bit later than some old books say.

In the end, the Vertical Alliance did not last. The six states often cared more about themselves than the group. They began to fight among themselves. This caused the alliance to break apart. Su Qin eventually moved to the state of Qi. He faced many enemies there. His life ended in a very sad and violent way. Even though his plan failed, people still study his life today. His ideas about alliances are still part of history.
