In 138 BC, Zhang Qian began his first big mission. He traveled with ninety-nine other people. His main goal was to find the Yuezhi people. He wanted them to help China against the Xiongnu. The Xiongnu were a group that controlled much of the land nearby. During his trip, the Xiongnu captured Zhang Qian and his guide, Ganfu. They kept him as a slave for thirteen years. He even married a Xiongnu woman during this time.

Eventually, Zhang Qian and Ganfu managed to escape. They traveled through many different areas. They saw the land of the Yuezhi. These people were nomads who moved with their herds. Zhang Qian also visited the kingdom of Dayuan. He saw that the people there grew grapes for wine. He even saw the first one-humped camels. He saw many cities with high walls. He noticed that these people were very skilled at trade.

Zhang Qian finally returned to China in 125 BC. He brought back many amazing stories for Emperor Wu. He told the Emperor about the kingdom of Anxi. He also spoke about the land of Shendu, which we call India. He described the powerful horses of Dayuan. These horses were known for being very strong. He told the Emperor that many lands were rich in new products. His reports were later written down by a man named Sima Qian.
