Xu Fu served as a sorcerer for the ruler Qin Shi Huang. This ruler was very powerful but also very afraid of death. He wanted to find a special medicine called an elixir. This elixir was supposed to help a person live forever. Xu Fu was chosen to lead the search for this magical medicine.

To find the elixir, Xu Fu had to sail across the eastern seas. His first big trip began in 219 BC. The ruler sent him with a huge fleet of ships. It is said there were 60 barques in the fleet. He took 3,000 boys and 3,000 girls on this mission. He also brought many skilled craftsmen and soldiers along. They were looking for a special place called Mount Penglai.

Xu Fu sailed for many years but could not find the mountain.

In 210 BC, Xu Fu went on a second mission. When the ruler asked for news, Xu Fu told a story. He said a giant sea creature was blocking the path. The ruler sent archers to kill a giant fish to help. After this, Xu Fu set sail again and never returned to China. Some old records say he landed in a place called Danzhou. Other texts say he found a land with wide swamps and flat plains. He reportedly named himself a king in this new land.

Many people in Japan believe Xu Fu landed there. A monk named Yichu wrote about this long after the voyages. He said Xu Fu might have named Mount Fuji as Penglai. Some stories say Xu Fu brought new ways to farm to Japan. He is also said to have brought new plants. Because of these gifts, some Japanese people worship him as a god. They call him the god of farming, medicine, and silk.

Many temples and memorials for him exist across Japan today.

Historians today still talk about whether these stories are true. Some scholars think Xu Fu might have really settled in Japan. They look at how people moved to Japan during the Yayoi period. This period started around 300 BC. Other scholars say there is not enough proof to be sure. They notice that many details in the stories are hard to check. It remains a famous legend that connects ancient China and Japan.
