Hou Yi is a famous figure from Chinese mythology.

He was a very skilled archer. Some stories call him the Lord Archer. People sometimes see him as a god of archery. Other stories say he was a xian. A xian is a being that comes from heaven to help people. Some tales say he was half-divine. Other versions say he was a regular mortal man. His wife was Chang'e, who is a goddess of the moon.

Many stories explain how the world became the way it is.

Long ago, there were ten suns in the sky. These suns were the sons or grandsons of the Jade Emperor. Usually, they crossed the sky one by one. One day, they all came out at the same time to play. This made the earth very hot and scorched the land. Emperor Yao or the Jade Emperor asked Hou Yi to help. Hou Yi tried to talk to the suns first. When they did not listen, he pretended to shoot them to scare them. He finally shot them one by one. As they fell, they turned into three-legged crows. Only one sun was left to help the people.

Hou Yi was also a great hunter who fought many monsters.

He was sent by King Yao to stop creatures that caused trouble. He fought many different mythical beasts. These included the Yayu, Zaochi, Jiuying, Dafeng, Fengxi, and Xiushe. He was known for slaying or catching these creatures. However, some stories show a different side of his character. In the poem Chu Ci, it says he became arrogant. It claims he became a tyrant and even killed Hebo. Hebo was the god of the Yellow River. These stories show that even heroes can have hard times.

There are many different stories about how Hou Yi got his special powers.

One story says he was given a pill of immortality by the gods. Another version says he got an elixir from Xiwangmu. His wife, Chang'e, became a lunar deity in a famous way. While Hou Yi was out hunting, an apprentice named Feng Meng tried to steal the pill. Chang'e swallowed the pill before he could get it. She became immortal and flew up to the moon. In another version, Chang'e ate the pill to stop Hou Yi from being a cruel king. People honor her during the Mid-Autumn Festival today.

Historians and researchers look at these stories in different ways.

Some old books call him a tribal leader from ancient China. The Bamboo Annals say he attacked the Xia dynasty. He took the capital city of Zhenxun during the first year of Taikang's reign. Later, a man named Han Zhuo took his power away. Some researchers have a new idea about the sun story. They think the legend might have started from a mistake in writing. It may have come from a story about Hou Yi shooting Xiang. These different ideas help us understand these old legends.
