Hou Yi was a famous archer from China.

Some stories say he was a god. Others say he was a mortal man. He was often called the Lord Archer. Long ago, ten suns lived in the sky. They were the sons or grandsons of the Jade Emperor. One day, the suns all came out at once. This made the earth very hot.

Emperor Yao asked Hou Yi to help. Hou Yi first tried to talk to the suns. They did not listen. He then used his bow to scare them. When they still did not listen, he shot them. The suns turned into three-legged crows as they fell. Only one sun was left in the sky. This was to keep the world warm.

Hou Yi also fought many monsters. These creatures caused trouble for people. He was a great hunter. His wife was named Chang'e. She was a lunar deity, or a goddess of the moon. She ate a pill of immortality. Then she flew up to the moon. People honor her during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
