Māui did many big things to help people. In some stories, he used a magic hook to fish up islands from the sea. In New Zealand, his big fish became the North Island. In Hawaii, he pulled up island groups with his hook too.

Māui also found a way to make fire. Before this, people ate food raw. He learned that rubbing sticks together could make fire. He even caught the sun with ropes. The sun used to move too fast across the sky. Māui made it move slowly so people could work and eat.

In some tales, Māui helped people see birds. Before, birds were hard to see with the eyes. He made them visible so people could see their bright colors. He also helped lift the sky. This gave plants and people more room to move. His stories are still a big part of life today.
