Some myths say he rose from Lake Titicaca. He brought light to a dark world. One story says he made humans by breathing into stones. His first try was giants, but they did not please him. He used a great flood to start over. Then he made humans from smaller stones.

Viracocha often traveled the land in disguise. He looked like a beggar. He taught people how to live in a civilized way. He also performed many miracles. Some say he had sons who named all the plants. They taught people which plants were safe to eat. Eventually, Viracocha walked across the ocean and disappeared. People thought he might return during hard times. His name might mean "sea foam."
