These beliefs came from older cultures in the Andes. One very important god was Viracocha. He was the creator of all things. He was also linked to the sea.

The Inca saw the world in many layers. They believed the universe had several parts. Some parts were the sky with the sun and moon. Other parts were the earth where humans and plants live. They even believed in a world below for spirits.

Animals were also a big part of their stories. The Inca saw animals in the stars of the Milky Way. They had many gods for different things. For example, Axomamma was the goddess of potatoes. Some gods were spirits of the mountains, called Apu. The sun god was named Inti. One legend says a leader named Manco Cápac was the son of the sun god. These stories helped the Inca know when to plant food. They also helped people share important ideas through time.
