This city was very high up in the mountains. It was the highest state capital in the ancient world.

Between the years 600 and 1000, Tiwanaku was very important. People think it was not a military empire. Instead, it was a network of strong families. These families held big feasts and ceremonies.

People traveled from far away to join them. They came in llama caravans to trade goods.

To feed many people, they used smart farming. They made raised fields with water canals.

The water in the canals stayed warm at night. This helped protect crops from the cold frost. They also built terraces on hillsides to hold water.

Tiwanaku people were great makers. They made colorful pottery and carved large stone statues.
