It rose in the high Andes mountains during the 1200s. The people called their land Tawantinsuyu. This name means the land of four parts. The center of the empire was the city of Cusco.

The Inca people were very smart builders. They made great stone walls without using iron or steel. They also built many roads to connect their land.

They did not use money to buy things. Instead, people shared goods and services. This was a way to help one another. People worked for the empire as a tax. In return, leaders gave them land and food. They even held big feasts for the people.

To keep track of things, they used quipu. A quipu is a set of knotted strings. These strings helped them keep records and send messages.

Later, Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s. They began to take over the empire. By 1572, the last Inca state was conquered.
