These roads helped people move across a huge empire. The roads went through six modern countries. These are Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.

The roads had two main paths. One path ran along the coast. The other path ran high in the mountains.

The Inca built many things to make the roads work. They made stairs to climb hills. They built bridges to cross rivers.

They even made water systems to drain the roads.

People used the roads to move goods and soldiers. They did not use wheels. Instead, they used runners called chasquis to carry news.

They also used llamas to carry heavy items. Along the way, travelers found special buildings. Some buildings were for rest. Others were warehouses called qullqas to store food.
