Its name comes from a Greek word for a cup. In old stories, this cup belongs to the god Apollo. The cup sits on the back of a water snake. This snake is a larger constellation called Hydra.

The stars in Crater are very interesting. The brightest star is named Delta Crateris. It is an orange giant star. This means it is much larger and cooler than our Sun. Another star, Alpha Crateris, is also an orange giant. There is a star system called Beta Crateris. It is made of two stars. One is a white giant and the other is a white dwarf. Scientists found seven star systems with planets in this area. You can also find far-off objects here. There are galaxies like NGC 3981.
