These tales come from many different regional traditions and cultures. They feature extraordinary people and beings with magical powers. Many of these stories take place in fantasy worlds or ancient times. For a long time, people saw these myths as factual records of the past. Today, they remain a huge part of folk religion and Taoism.

These stories often explain how the universe and its people began. Some myths describe the very start of the world and its gods. Other stories show how early humans learned important skills. These culture heroes taught people how to cook or build houses. They even taught the basics of writing. Some of these figures were seen as ancestors for certain families or groups.

Mythology in China is closely tied to deep philosophical ideas. These ideas include concepts like li and qi. These terms are linked to social rituals like dances and ceremonies. There is a strong connection between myths and traditions like Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. For example, Taoism includes ideas about a spiritual paradise for immortals. These beliefs often spread across many different ethnic groups. Some beliefs stay limited to specific social groups instead.

Pangu is said to have created the world using his body. Nuwa is known for mending the sky and creating humans. Other legends tell of Jingwei filling the sea or Kuafu chasing the sun. There are also many folk legends, like the story of Chang'e flying to the moon. Literary myths include famous tales like Journey to the West. These stories have been told for many centuries.

Many myths also describe a special map of the universe.

Some people believed the earth was square and the sky was round. Above the sky is the realm of Heaven, or Tian. This place is often seen as a huge area with a government. Below the earth is an underground land called Diyu or the Yellow Springs. This world is sometimes described as a place for souls.
