Many people see her as a mother goddess. She is also known as a culture hero. Some stories even list her as one of the Three Sovereigns. This means she is one of the most important leaders in myth. She is highly respected alongside other famous goddesses like Guanyin and Mazu.

One of her most famous roles is as a creator. Many stories say she made the first humans.

In one version, she molded people by hand using yellow clay. These people were the nobles and the rich. To make more people, she dragged a string through mud. This created the commoners, sometimes called "cord-made people." This story helped explain why different social classes existed in ancient China. Another story says humans came from pieces of a ball of meat.

Nüwa is also known for saving the world from disaster. The book called the Huainanzi tells of a great battle. This battle happened between deities named Gonggong and Zhuanxu. Their fight broke the pillars that support the heavens. This caused the sky to fall and led to huge floods.

To fix this, Nüwa used five colored stones to patch the holes. She also used the legs of a tortoise to mend the pillars. These stones are said to represent the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.

In art, Nüwa has a very unique look. She is often shown with a human head and a snake-like body.

She is frequently paired with her husband, Fuxi. Some ancient murals show their snake tails intertwined. Fuxi is known as a patron of numbers and divination. Nüwa is often shown holding a compass. This tool is a symbol of the dome-like sky. She might also hold symbols of the sun or the moon.

Nüwa's stories appear in many famous Chinese books. The Classic of Mountains and Seas is one very old source. Another important text is the Huainanzi. Even the Ming dynasty novel Fengshen Yanyi features her. In that novel, she plays a role in the fall of the Shang dynasty. She sent subordinates to influence King Zhou after he disrespected her. These stories show how her character has changed over hundreds of years. She remains a powerful symbol of creation and protection today.
