Chiyou is a very famous figure in Chinese mythology. He was a powerful tribal leader of the Nine Li tribe. People have many different ideas about who he really was. Some stories describe him as a brave and bold king. Other traditions see him as a demon god of war and chaos.

Because people view him so differently, he is a very complex character. His legacy stays important in many cultures even today.

Many legends give Chiyou a very unusual appearance. Some stories say he had a head made of bronze. He might have had four eyes and six arms to hold many weapons. Other versions say he had the head of a bull and the body of a human. He might have even had the back parts of a bear.

These strange features show how fierce and powerful he was thought to be. He was said to have 81 brothers or perhaps 81 different clans in his kingdom.

Chiyou was also known for his connection to nature and weather. He knew how to use ancient spells to call upon the sky. During the Battle of Zhuolu, he breathed out a thick fog to hide his army.

This made it very hard for the Yellow Emperor to see. Chiyou even used heavy storms to fight his enemies. The battle lasted for ten long years before the Yellow Emperor finally won. The Yellow Emperor had to use a special south-pointing chariot to find his way through the mist.

Different groups of people hold very different beliefs about him. For some Hmong people, Chiyou was a wise and sagacious king. In the town of Zhuolu, a statue honors him as an ancestor of the Miao people.

However, some Daoist traditions view him as an evil god of violence. Even ancient leaders like Qin Shi Huang worshipped him as a God of War. This shows that his reputation changed depending on who was telling the story.

Today, you can still find Chiyou in many parts of modern culture. His name and ideas appear in many video games and comic books. For example, a Pokémon named Chi-Yu is named after him.

He also appears as a character in games like God Eater and Assassin's Creed. You can even see his influence in South Korean coins. It is amazing how a myth from ancient China can travel into the modern world.
