Because of this, it is one of four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism. The other sacred mountains are Mount Wutai, Mount Jiuhua, and Mount Emei. People visit this island to feel close to their faith. It is a place where the mountains meet the sea.

Many people travel to the island for special religious reasons. Millions of people visit during the second, sixth, and ninth lunar months. They come to celebrate the birth of Guanyin on the 19th day of those months. The island is covered in many different temples and monasteries.

There are more than 30 major temples on the island today. Some of these are very old, like the Puji Temple from the 10th century. Other famous ones include the Fayu Temple and the Huiji Temple. These buildings are all part of a large group called the Buddhist Association of China.

History shows that people have visited Mount Putuo for over a thousand years. After the Tang dynasty, it became a center for worshiping Guanyin. Many famous people have stayed there over the years. In 1612, a young man named Yinyuan Longqi visited the island. He was looking for his father who had disappeared years before. Later, a man named Taixu spent several years living alone in a small hermitage. These stories show how much the island has meant to people for a long time.

Nature is also a huge part of the island's story.

There are 238 different kinds of trees and shrubs growing there. Some trees, like the ginkgo, can live for more than a thousand years. There are even 10 large ginkgo trees on the island. One very special plant is called Carpinus putoensis. This plant is only found on Mount Putuo. Because it is so rare, it is listed as a critically endangered species. There are 282 ancient trees in total across the island.

Getting to the island is an interesting journey for visitors. You can take a bus from cities like Shanghai or Ningbo.

You can also take a ferry or a boat to reach the wharf. Interestingly, private cars are not allowed to drive on the island. This rule helps keep the air clean and prevents traffic jams. Since there is only one main road, people use buses and cable cars instead. This helps protect the environment and the beautiful scenery of the island.
