The mountain has many different layers of nature. At the bottom, you will find green evergreen forests. These forests have many types of trees like oaks and laurels. As you climb higher, the trees change. You will see different kinds of forests with needles and leaves. Near the very top, the plants turn into small shrubs. The weather at the summit is a subarctic climate. This means the winters are long and cold. The summers are short and cool. It also rains a lot during the year.

Many people visit the mountain for its history and religion. It is the place where the first Buddhist temple in China was built. There are seventy-six Buddhist monasteries on the mountain. Most of these buildings are near the top. The architects were very clever with their designs. Some buildings sit on raised stilts. Other buildings are built on flat levels called terraces.
