Mount Emei holds deep religious significance for Buddhist practitioners. It is traditionally considered the bodhimaṇḍa, or place of enlightenment, for the Bodhisattva Puxian. This is also known as Samantabhadra. Chinese pilgrims travel there regularly to offer prayers. They sometimes burn sandalwood to send prayers to heaven. Historical sources from the 16th and 17th centuries also mention martial arts. These arts were practiced in the mountain's many monasteries.

The mountain contains seventy-six Buddhist monasteries from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Most of these structures are located near the summit. The architecture is highly flexible to match the landscape. For example, the halls of Baoguosi are built on terraces of different levels. Other structures, like Leiyinsi, sit on raised stilts. The Qingyinge buildings sit on an irregular plot. They are located between the Black Dragon River and the White Dragon River.

The mountain is famous for its endemic plants. These are species found nowhere else. There are about 100 such species. These include the Magnolia omeiensis and the Abies fabri fir tree.
