Mount Hua, also known as Huashan, is a famous mountain in China. It is located in Shaanxi Province near the city of Huayin. This mountain sits east of Xi'an and near the Yellow River basin. It is part of the Qinling or Qin Mountains. This mountain range is very important because it divides northern and southern China. Mount Hua is known as the "Number One Steepest Mountain Under Heaven." It is also recognized as the "Western Mountain" among the Five Great Mountains of China.

The geography of the mountain is defined by its many high points. While it was originally classified as having three peaks, it is now known to have five main peaks. The South Peak is the highest point, reaching an elevation of 2,154.9 meters. The North Peak is the lowest of the five summits. The West Peak is called the Lotus Flower Summit, or Lianhua Feng. The East Peak contains four different summits, including the Zhaoyang Feng, which means the summit facing the sun. The middle peak is the Yunü Feng, or Jade Maiden Summit.

Climbing the mountain requires navigating specific geological features and paths. For a long time, the only way to reach the summits was through a ridge called Canglong Ling, or Dark Dragon Ridge. A second trail was built in the 1980s to go around this ridge. There are three main routes leading to the North Peak. The most popular is the Hua Shan Gorge route, which was developed between the 3rd and 5th centuries. Another route follows the Huang Pu Gorge. This path used to be the ancient trail used before the Tang dynasty.

Mount Hua has a very deep religious and spiritual history. As early as the 2nd century BC, a Daoist shrine existed at its base. Daoists believed the mountain was home to the god of the underworld. Because the summits were so hard to reach, only imperial and local pilgrims visited. The mountain was also a place for people seeking immortality. Many Chinese medicinal plants grew on its slopes. Some people believed powerful drugs could be found there. In the 1230s, the Daoist Quanzhen School took control of the mountain temples.

The mountain's importance grew significantly during the Tang dynasty from 618 to 907. During this time, Mount Hua sat at the midpoint between the two capital cities, Chang'an and Luoyang. Emperor Xuanzong even named the mountain's deity the "King of the Metal Heavens." Many famous historical figures, such as Qin Shihuang and Sun Yat-sen, have visited. There is an old saying among scholars about the mountain. It says that if you do not visit Huashan, you are not a true hero. This shows how much the mountain is respected in Confucianism and Taoism.

Local legends explain the mountain's dramatic shapes and features. One legend says the god Juling Shen used an axe to sever the mountain from its surroundings. This act supposedly created a path for the Yellow River to reach the sea. Another story involves the deity Xiyue Dadi and his daughter, Huayue Sanniang. She married a mortal man, which led to her being imprisoned beneath the mountain. Her son, Chenxiang, is said to have split a giant rock to rescue her. This 100-foot-high rock is known as the Axe-splitting Rock and sits on the West Peak.

Visiting the mountain today can be a challenging experience. The steep paths have earned a reputation as some of the most dangerous hikes in the world. In the past, climbers had to use stairs cut into rock and chains for handrails. To make it safer, the government has added stone steps, wider paths, and railings. A cable car was also installed in the 1990s to help people reach the peaks. Some people still climb at night to reach the East Peak by dawn. This tradition started so climbers could avoid the danger of the tracks in the dark or avoid crowds on narrow paths.
