Leshan has a very long history that goes back many years. Written records show people lived there around 700 BC. Long ago, the Ba people moved to this river area. They built a tribal center where the rivers meet. Over many centuries, the city changed names several times. It was once called Jiazhou and Jiading. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, it became a very large city. It was even the third-largest city in the whole Sichuan region. Many different groups of leaders have ruled the area over time.

During a difficult time in the 1930s, Leshan became a safe place for treasures. The Nationalist government moved many items from the Forbidden City to Leshan. These items were kept there from 1939 until 1947. Many schools also moved to the area during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Wuhan University and Sichuan University both had time in Leshan. This helped the city become a place for learning and art. Today, the city has several government-funded colleges for students. These schools help people learn about many different subjects.

There are many famous things to see in Leshan. The Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest stone-carved Buddha in the world.
