arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Leshan Giant Buddha is a massive stone statue in China. It is the tallest stone Buddha statue in the entire world. This huge sculpture sits on a red cliff at the meeting point of three rivers. These are the Min River, the Dadu River, and the Qingyi River. People find this site very special and beautiful. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Builders used a very smart way to keep the statue safe. They built a drainage system into the stone body. This system uses hidden gutters and channels to move rainwater away. These pipes are tucked into the hair, collar, chest, and even the ears. This helps keep the inside of the statue dry. It stops the rain from wearing the stone away over time. This clever design has worked for over 1,200 years.

A monk named Hai Tong started this big job in 722 AD. He lived during the Tang dynasty. He believed the statue would calm the rough river waters. This would help ships travel more safely. The work was very hard and took many years. Construction stopped and started many times because of money. Eventually, leaders like Wei Gao helped finish the work in 803.

The statue is incredibly large in every way. It is ten stories high. If the Buddha stood up, he would be as tall as the Statue of Liberty. His head has 1,021 small curls carved into it. His ears are so big they could hold two people. Even his smallest toenail is large enough for a person to sit on. His instep is wide enough to hold about one hundred people.

Today, millions of people visit the Leshan Scenic Area. Many come to pray for good luck during the Chinese New Year. Some people walk on steep, narrow paths to see the Buddha up close. Others take sightseeing boats on the river for a wide view. Visitors can also see the Mahao Cliff Tombs from the Han dynasty nearby. This place connects ancient history with the modern world.
