It stands on Vindhyagiri Hill in the town of Shravanabelagola. This hill is also called Indra-giri. The statue is a monolith. This means it was carved from one single block of granite. It is one of the tallest statues of its kind in the ancient world. Many people find it very special because of its size. It was even voted a wonder of India in a 2007 poll.

The statue shows a Jain figure named Bahubali. He represents ideas like peace and non-violence. He also shows the value of simple living. The statue shows him in a pose called kayotsarga. This means he is standing very still for meditation. He is so still that vines grew around his legs.

There is even an anthill behind him in the carving. You can see a snake and a creeper plant near his legs. His face has a small smile to show inner peace.

A man named Chavundaraya ordered the statue to be made. He was a minister and a commander. He worked for the Western Ganga dynasty. The carving was finished around the year 983 CE.

Near the statue, there are other Jain temples called basadis. There is also another hill nearby called Chandragiri. That hill is home to older Jain centers. It is dedicated to Bharat, who was the brother of Bahubali.

Every twelve years, a big festival happens at the statue. It is called Mahamastakabhisheka.

During this time, the statue gets a ritual bath. People pour milk, saffron, and ghee over it. They also use sugarcane juice. This event brings followers from all over the world. The next big festival will be in the year 2030. A scholar named Heinrich Zimmer thought these baths kept the statue looking fresh.

Many important people have visited this site for the festival. For example, Krishna-Rajendra Wodeyar visited in 1910. More recently, Narendra Modi and Ramnath Kovind came in 2018.
