Bahubali is a deeply revered figure in the Jain religion.

He was the son of Rishabhanatha, who was the very first tirthankara. Bahubali was also the brother of a man named Bharata. He was born into the Ikshvaku dynasty in the city of Ayodhya. As a young man, he was very skilled in many things. He studied medicine, archery, and how to grow flowers. He also had great knowledge about precious gems.

One famous story involves a struggle for power between the two brothers. When their father became a monk, he gave his kingdom to his sons. Bharata received the kingdom of Vinita, while Bahubali received Asmaka. Bharata eventually led a huge army to gather more land. Because the brothers were special, ministers said they could not be killed in war. Instead, they held three types of contests to settle their dispute. They had an eye-fight, a water-fight, and a wrestling match. Bahubali won all three of these contests against his brother.

After these contests, Bahubali decided to change his entire life. He felt a strong desire for renunciation, which means giving things up. He left behind his kingdom, his clothes, and all his ornaments. He became a monk to seek omniscience, or total knowledge.

Bahubali meditated in a standing posture called kayotsarga. He stayed motionless for a long time while plants grew around his legs. He did not mind the ants, the dust, or the vines. Eventually, he attained omniscience and later reached liberation at Mount Kailasha.

Many people honor Bahubali by building huge statues called monoliths. These are carved from one single, massive block of stone.

The most famous statue is at Shravanabelagola in Karnataka. It was built around 981 CE by a minister named Chavundaraya. This statue is 17.4 meters tall and is one of the largest in the world. Every 12 years, people celebrate a special event there called Mahamastakabhisheka. Other large statues can be found in places like Karkala and Venur.

Stories about Bahubali are found in many ancient books and poems. A 9th-century Sanskrit poem called the Adipurana tells his life story. This poem was written by a monk named Jinasena. Other writers in Kannada, Prakrit, and Gujarati have also written about him.
