Jains believe he was the 24th and final Tirthankara of this time cycle. A Tirthankara is a supreme preacher or a "ford-maker." This means they help people cross the sea of birth and death. Historians believe he lived around the 6th or 5th century BCE. He is seen as a reformer of an older Jain community. This community was likely led by a man named Parshvanatha.

At age 30, he left his home and his riches behind. He became an ascetic, which means he lived a very simple life. He practiced intense meditation for twelve and a half years. After this, he reached a state called Kevala Jnana. This is a type of omniscience, or knowing everything.

Mahavira spent 30 years teaching his followers how to live. He taught that people must follow five special vows. These vows are non-violence, truth, not stealing, chastity, and non-attachment. He also taught a concept called Anekantavada. This is the idea of many-sided reality. It means that truth has many different sides. He taught people to see themselves as pure souls. This helps them stay steady even when life is hard.

His chief disciple, Indrabhuti Gautama, helped collect his teachings. These teachings are known as the Jain Agamas. These texts were passed down by word of mouth for a long time. Most of them were lost by the 1st century CE.

Today, Jains still honor Mahavira in many ways. They celebrate his birth as Mahavira Janma Kalyanaka. They also observe his passing and his wisdom during Diwali.
