In ancient India, a special group of people lived very different lives. They were known as śramaṇas. This name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning to labor or to toil.

These individuals were seekers who exerted themselves for a higher religious purpose. They often practiced austerity, which means living with very few comforts. Many śramaṇas were wandering ascetics who traveled from place to place. They sought to find deep truths through their own hard work and discipline.

The śramaṇa tradition includes many diverse belief systems. Famous examples include Buddhism and Jainism. Other groups that belonged to this tradition were the Ājīvika, Ajñana, and Cārvāka. These groups were often seen as separate from the Vedic religion. While Vedic followers looked to sacred scriptures for authority, śramaṇas often rejected them. Some thinkers call this distinction the difference between āstika and nāstika systems. This tradition helped develop ideas used in many Indian religions today.

These followers held a wide range of different ideas. Some believed in a soul, while others did not. Some people believed in free will, but others did not. Their daily lives followed different rules. Some were strict vegetarians and followed the rule of ahimsa, or non-violence. Others might eat meat or allow violence. Some groups followed specific dress codes. Other groups chose to live completely nude in their social lives.

The history of these groups is very old. The earliest use of the word śramaṇa is found in the Taittiriya Aranyaka. This is part of the Yajurveda from around 1000 BCE. At that time, the word was used for great rishi sages. Later, it came to mean people who rejected the Vedas. Jain literature also uses the term in very old texts. The Sutrakritanga was composed after the 2nd century BCE. Another text, the Ācārāṅga Sūtra, was edited by Acharya Devardhigani Kshamashraman around 454 CE.

Śramaṇa ideas helped shape how people think about life and death. They developed the concept of saṃsāra, which is the cycle of death and rebirth. They also taught about moksha, which is liberation from that cycle. These ideas are still important in many faiths. Some scholars believe these traditions grew in a place called Greater Magadha. In this area, different ways of thinking mixed together. This helped create the many religious paths we see in India today.
